Financing a Used Car in Maine With Bad Credit or No Credit

If your credit has taken a hit, or you have never had any to begin with, the thing standing between you and a car is usually not the loan. It is not knowing what happens when you apply, and not wanting to find that out in front of a stranger. So here is the process, in advance. Our finance team submits your application to a network of lenders, and several of them write specifically for buyers with a thin file, a low score, a discharged bankruptcy or income that does not arrive as a tidy biweekly pay stub. What a lender decides is the lender’s call and depends on your whole picture. What we can hand you before any of that is what they look at, what to bring, and what happens at each step. We are on Route 1 in Thomaston, and we sell to people from Rockland, Camden, Belfast and Waldoboro who live ten minutes away. We also sell to people who drove down from Bangor or up from Portland, because nothing says you have to shop where you live.

The rest of the application matters more than people expect

A credit score is a summary, and every summary leaves things out. It does not say you have held the same job for years, or paid the same landlord on time the whole while, or that the rough stretch on your report was a medical year that has since ended. The lenders who write in this space are looking for exactly the things the number left out. Which makes the most useful hour you can spend before applying the one where you gather the paperwork that fills those gaps back in. Here is what tends to matter, sorted out by your situation.

Can you finance a car in Maine after a bankruptcy?

Yes, and it is more ordinary than most people expect walking in. A discharged Chapter 7, or a Chapter 13 in good standing, does not end the conversation. Several of the lenders we submit to run programs built for the years right after a filing, on the reasoning that the debt which caused the trouble is gone and what is left is your income. Whether any individual application is approved still comes down to the lender and the full file. Bring the discharge paperwork if you have it. If you are still inside a Chapter 13, bring the plan and, if your trustee requires one, the authorization to take on new debt. Having those in hand on the first visit is what keeps this to one visit. If you are not sure what your paperwork should look like, send us a message before you come in and we will tell you what to pull.

What if you have never had credit at all?

No credit is a different issue from damaged credit, and it is usually the easier one to solve. There is nothing negative on your file. There is simply not much file. Lenders handle that by leaning on what they can verify instead: how long you have been at your job, how long you have been at your address, and what you are putting toward the purchase. This comes up with people fresh out of school, people who have paid cash their whole lives, and people who moved to the United States recently and are building a file from zero. A co-signer helps if you have someone willing to be one, and it is not the only route in. The first loan is the hard one. After that you have a payment history, and payment history is the thing every later approval gets built on. Come talk to us about the first one.

Self-employed, seasonal and 1099 income

Maine runs on seasonal work. Lobstering, the building trades, summer businesses on the coast, plowing through the winter. Plenty of our customers earn a year of living in bursts, and an underwriter who only knows how to read a biweekly stub will struggle with that shape. What works instead is documented history. Two years of returns, or a run of bank statements showing the deposits landing, or both together. If you own the business, the business return does the same job. It is more paper than a salaried buyer brings, and it is the whole ballgame, because an underwriter who can see the pattern can lend against the pattern. Tell us how you get paid when you first reach out, and we will line up the right lender before your application goes anywhere.

Buying from a dealer instead of a private seller

This part is worth knowing whether you buy from us or from anyone else. Maine has its own used car statute, the Used Car Information Act, and it puts obligations on a licensed dealer that a private seller does not carry.

  • A posted buyers guide. Maine dealers post the state’s own Used Vehicle Buyer’s Guide on the vehicle rather than the federal version. It states the warranty on offer, says whether implied warranties are being disclaimed, and becomes part of your paperwork.
  • Written disclosure of history. Prior substantial collision damage, a repossession, and a manufacturer buyback all have to be disclosed to you in writing.
  • A car that will pass inspection. A used vehicle sold by a Maine dealer normally carries a current sticker, which the state calls the warranty of inspectability. The window on that is in the questions below.
  • Somebody to call. A dealer license sits with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, so there is a regulator on the other end of the transaction.

A private seller owes you none of that. When you are weighing two cars and one of them is sitting on a lot, that difference belongs in the comparison alongside the price.

Planning around the rate you get today

We will be straight with you about the rate, because you are going to see it on the paperwork. A loan written while you are rebuilding carries a higher rate than one written against a long clean file. That is how lenders price risk and there is no version of this where it works differently. The part worth planning around is what comes next. That rate is priced on the file you have today, and every on-time payment on this loan is a fresh entry in that file. After a stretch of them, refinancing becomes a reasonable thing to ask your bank about. Plenty of people treat the first loan after a rough patch as the loan they are stuck with. Which is why, when we are matching you to a vehicle, we are really matching you to a monthly payment you can hit every month without thinking hard about it. Pick the payment first. Then pick the car. We will work the inventory from there.

Does applying in several places hurt you?

Less than people fear. The scoring models were built knowing that shopping for one car loan means more than one lender pulls your file, so auto inquiries made close together get grouped and counted as a single event. FICO and VantageScore draw that window differently, and keeping your applications inside about two weeks puts you inside both of them. Which also means there is no benefit to spacing them out over a month. If you are going to shop, shop, and do it in one stretch. Our finance team submits to multiple lenders from one application, so the whole comparison happens inside that window without you filling anything out twice.

Financing questions we get asked at the desk

Can I get a car loan in Maine with bad credit?

Often, yes. Shepard Select submits applications to a network of lenders, several of which write specifically for buyers with low scores, past collections or a thin credit file. Approval and terms are the lender’s decision and rest on your whole application rather than the score alone, which is why we would rather look at the full picture with you than guess from a number.

What credit score do I need to buy a used car?

There is no single cutoff. Lenders weigh your income, how long you have been at your job and your address, your existing monthly obligations and the vehicle itself alongside the score. We have written loans across a wide range, and the score is rarely the only thing that decided it.

Can I finance a car after Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy?

Yes, and it comes up regularly. Several lenders we work with run programs aimed at the period right after a discharge. Bring your discharge paperwork, and if you are still inside a Chapter 13, bring the plan and any trustee authorization to take on new debt.

Does applying for financing hurt my credit score?

A credit application creates an inquiry, but auto inquiries made close together are grouped and counted once. FICO allows a 45-day window on its newer scoring models and 14 days on older ones, and VantageScore uses 14 days, so keeping your applications inside about two weeks keeps you inside all of them.

Do I need a down payment to finance a car?

It depends on the lender, the vehicle and the program, and a trade-in can do the same job as cash. We would rather work out what you have available than quote you a figure that turns out not to apply to your deal.

Can I trade in a car I still owe money on?

In most cases, yes. What matters is your payoff amount set against what the vehicle appraises for. Get the payoff figure from your lender before you come in and we can show you exactly where the two numbers land.

Does Shepard Select finance first-time buyers?

Yes. First-time buyers are a regular part of what we do. Without a credit history, lenders lean harder on job and address stability and on what you bring to the deal, so come with pay stubs and proof of address.

How does Maine protect used car buyers?

Maine has its own Used Car Information Act. It requires dealers to post the state Used Vehicle Buyer’s Guide on the vehicle, to disclose prior substantial collision damage, repossession and manufacturer buybacks in writing, and to state the warranty being offered. A private seller carries none of those obligations.

Do used cars from Maine dealers come with a current inspection sticker?

Generally yes. Maine calls it the warranty of inspectability, and a used vehicle sold by a dealer normally carries a sticker issued within the previous 60 days, meaning it passes state inspection on the day you take delivery. Narrow exceptions exist and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles publishes the detail.

Will Shepard Select work with buyers from outside Midcoast Maine?

As far as you care to drive. We are on Route 1 in Thomaston and we sell to people from Rockland and Camden as readily as to people coming from Bangor, Augusta or Portland. The application is submitted the same way wherever in Maine you live.

Can I start the financing conversation before I pick a car?

Yes, and it is usually the better order. Knowing what you can comfortably carry every month narrows the inventory before you get attached to something sitting outside it.
